Cheap Dog Kennels – Build Your Own

Materials

– (2) Sheets 4′x8′ Plywood, 1/4″ Thick
– (4) 2″x4″ Boards, 8′ Long
– (1) Box 8P Nails, Galvanized
– Hand Saw, Or Electric Saw

Construction

Step 1) The first step is to construct the frame of the dog kennel. Start by cutting (2) of the 2″x4″ boards into sections. You will need (4) 2’6″ sections, and (4) 1’6″ sections. Cutting the boards in these lengths will leave you even amounts, and completely use up (2) solid 2’4″s. Use the 1’6″ sections for the front and back of the dog kennel, and the 2’6″ sections for the sides of the frame. Separate them, and nail (1) 1’6″ to the ends of the 2’6″ sections to create the start of a rectangular frame. Finish by nailing the last 1’6″ section to the opposite side of the frame. Repeat this process on the other pieces of cut 2’4″ as well. You should now have (2) rectangles that you are going to use for the base, and the roof section of the kennel.

Step 2) You are now going to want to cut a section off of one of the sheets of plywood that is 1’6″ wide by 2’6″ deep. This section of plywood will be used for the floor of the kennel. Repeat this process by cutting (2) more sections at 2’6″ wide x 1’6″ high. These sections are going to be used for the sides of the kennel. Proceed to cut (2) more sections at 1’6″ high x 1’6″ wide to use for the front and back of the kennel. After you have these sections cut, you can begin assembling the base, sides, front, and back of the kennel.

Step 3) Nail the floor down to the base rectangle that you built from the 2″x4″s earlier. You can then attach the sides, front, and back to the dog kennel by nailing the boards to the 2″x4″ base as well. Once you have the sides, front, and back attached you will want to attach the 2nd rectangle frame to the top of the plywood that you’ve attached to the bottom frame. You should now have a complete box, and ready to assemble the roof.

Step 4) You are going to want to utilize cardboard while assembling the roof to keep the process simple. Cut the sections you need to complete the roof, and the gables on both ends of the dog kennel. Once you have cut the final sheets for the roof and gable sections, you will want to cut the front opening for the dog to enter and leave.
